(from the great song "Portland, Oregon" by Loretta Lynn with Jack White)
Technically, I've been back from Oregon for over a week, but last week was a bit hectic, so, here we are.
Oregon was great. The 13 hour or so drive wasn't too bad (which is a miracle since I hate sitting in the car for very long) thanks to great company and beautiful scenery. Things would have only been made better if Vegs hadn't been hurting from his surgery and knocked out on Percocets most of the time.
It was such a nice, relaxing time. We stayed in Seaside, which is a little trashy, but I like it anyway (the people watching was AH-MAZING!) and so spent the evenings there, but the days we spent at Cannon Beach and Astoria (both with Goonies ties).
Astoria is pretty much my dream town. It's a little worn down, the way I have always imagined coastal towns to be, and if there were jobs out there, I would have no problem moving there right now.
I don't know why I feel such a connection to the ocean, I wasn't around it very much at all as a kid, but I am so drawn to its vastness. I think that's why I like Oregon so much, because it has mountains and ocean so close to one another, and it was never hotter than 65 while we were out there. I just can't complain about it in any way.
We got back last Monday and I had a job interview for a position I really wanted. I did really well, but they ended up going with someone else, so I'm pretty bummed out.
I've been putting job applications out all over to see if there's anything else better out there for me.
In good news, Vegor got a job interview with college marketing and we're really keeping our fingers crossed. If he gets it, I would love to try and get a part time gig on campus and then finish up my education certificate. I only have 7 credits left on my English degree, so getting the certificate should only take about a year. I don't love teaching (but, alternatively, I don't hate it, either) but I think I'm really good at it, so it looks like it may be the best field for me. I think I could tailor teaching high school English to discussing the things that I'm really passionate about, and I think it would be good to keep my head in the space of reading and writing all the time to facilitate the writing I feel like I should be doing anyway.
